Hunting Purple Donkeys

Purple Donkey Orchids that is! or Duiris punctata. This beautiful Diuris occurs along the roadsides of the Longford-Rosedale Road, Longford, Victoria. I've been hunting this little beauty for a few weeks now, waiting for them to burst into bloom. And bloom it has this season! In some locations their sweet purple haze can be viewed as far as the eye can see.

As with many other orchids the Purple Donkey keeps some interesting company although much more common than itself. In the same area Slender Onion Orchids Microtis parviflora and Chocolate scented Lily's Arthropodium strictum are reasonably widespread. Apart from it's delicious smell, the Chocolate Lily is an indigenious bush food with it's edible tuber able to be eaten raw or roasted. I've never tried it and wouldn't recommend it, but an interesting little bit of info all the same.

I've been snapping shots of many other orchids as they've appear over the past month, but have been very slack at keeping this blog up dated on a regular basis. It's quite difficult to continue a new hobby long enough for it to become a daily habit, especially with all the other distractions of life, work and family. As we travel head long into Christmas, every weekend seems to be choc full of social events. It no wonder why we need a long holiday after it's all over!

Hope everyone enjoyed Halloween. It's not something that we generally celebrate in Australia, but when you have a baby that's born on halloween who can resist having a witches and wizards themed birthday party. Customes and decorations were far more prominent in the stores this year which made my life so much easier. Both kids and adults dressed up and even the rain didn't stop us from having fun.
